Skill Matrix: A Bridge Linking Employee Development to the Organization’s Overall Goals
A skills (competencies) matrix is a tool that provides a visual way to manage employees’ knowledge and skills. It is most often presented in the form of a table, which is designed to be simple and understandable at every level of the organization. It serves to define requirements for employees (regarding their mastery of specific process-related skills) and to map the current state of their skills. Comparing the current status to the target status typically serves as the primary indicator for adjusting an employee’s base pay within the pay range.
Traditional Matrices vs. WinWin
Excel
- Their static nature and lack of automation—XLS files do not take action on their own; that is, they do not recalculate data in real time, do not “keep track” of deadlines, do not send notifications, etc.
- Restricted access – as a rule, only managers (leaders, supervisors, etc.) have access to Excel files, while front-line employees do not.
- Limited collaboration capabilities - In Excel, teamwork can lead to conflicts when multiple people edit the same file at the same time, which increases the risk of errors and makes working on the file more time-consuming.
- Limited scalability – Excel becomes cumbersome as the number of employees and the complexity of tasks increase. Managing large datasets in a spreadsheet is more difficult, especially if the data needs to be updated frequently.
- Limited reporting capabilities—Excel offers only basic reporting functions; it lacks the ability to generate more detailed reports, analyze trends, or present results in a clearer way.
WinWin
- Dynamic functionality and automation—the WinWin system updates data in real time, counts down the time remaining until the end of training, notifies users of upcoming certification renewal deadlines, and suggests job reassignments.
- Transparency – a clear interface tailored to each user’s permission level—whether they are an employee, a team leader, a member of senior management, an HR representative, or an administrator.
- Integrated operation – multiple users can perform actions simultaneously within the system and make changes according to their permission levels. The system also integrates information in real time with other modules (such as the feedback module or the performance results module).
- Full scalability – the WinWin system is capable of supporting thousands of active users simultaneously across various locations.
- Smart Reporting – The WinWin system generates real-time reports, both on a micro level (for employee-leader interactions) and on a macro level (for managers), based on permission levels. Reports can be flexibly customized to meet the organization’s needs.
